Dr. Richard Carrier: "The Importance of Philosophy"

  • Paul and Jack's Tavern 1808 Clay Street North Kansas City, MO, 64116 United States (map)

This event is hosted by the Kansas City Atheist Coalition (KCAC). The details below have come from the Facebook Event Page.

Many of us understand and appreciate the value science and its associated fields of study bring to our daily lives, but what about philosophy? Is it a field relegated to the ancients, relevant only in the days of Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, and Friedrich Nietzsche - a field with no impact and utility in our lives today? Is it a field only used by the likes of William Lane Craig and Sye Ten Bruggencate to further evangelical Christian apologetics?

The Kansas City Atheist Coalition invites you to join us as we host Dr. Richard Carrier in helping us understand the importance of philosophy and how we use it to navigate the problems and questions that we all face on a daily basis.

Doors open at 5:30pm and the presentation begins at 6:00pm. The duration of the presentation is one hour, with a thirty-minute period afterward for Q&A. Books by Dr. Carrier will be available for purchase after the event, and Dr. Carrier will be available after the event to sign books.

We will adjourn afterward for drinks, food, and conversation.

Richard Carrier has a Ph.D. in the history of philosophy from Columbia University, and is a published philosopher and historian, specializing in contemporary philosophy of naturalism, and in Greco-Roman philosophy, science, and religion, and the origins of Christianity. He blogs regularly, lectures for community groups worldwide, and teaches courses online. He is the author of many books including Sense and Goodness without God, On the Historicity of Jesus, and Proving History, as well as chapters in several anthologies and articles in academic journals.
